“The start is what stops most people.”– Don Shula
ewards of early rising have been highlighted in this blog through a gripping interaction between a master and his student.
Master hurled a well-aimed stone at the luscious mangoes teasing from a big mango tree in the orchard. Two ripe mangoes got severed by the stone and fell to the ground with a weighty thud sound. Master cleaned those mangoes with water and lovingly offered one to me. The delicious taste of the fruit kept me at the edge of my seat until I completely devoured it.
“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise. This axiom coined by the great Benjamin Franklin must not be an outcome of his whimsical and fanciful thinking,” Swami sounded to commence his training, “it is a wonderful boon of his considerable amount of painstaking contemplation and experimentation. It befits you to rise early in the morning at around 04:00 AM and drift off to sleep by around 10:30 PM and it may make your heart skip some beats to learn that five hours of deep sleep is enough for a person to carry out his day’s responsibilities with ease. Having said that, I would like to add that when you sleep at 10:30 PM and get up at 04:00 AM you actually rest for full ten hours.” Before Swami could proceed I jumped in between.
“Sorry for disruption Guruji, if I sleep for the aforesaid duration then I actually sleep for five and a half hours instead of what you claim i.e. ten hours.” I incisively offered.
“Great Rishi,” Swami commended, “You are destined to leave your mark in this world. The history of great men has already made a space for accommodating your potentially exalted life.”
“Now listen to me more carefully, my boy. It’s a proven fact that in between 09:00 PM to 12:00 AM, one hour of sleep is equivalent to 3 hours of profound rest. In between 12:00 AM to 03:00 AM, one hour of sleep is equivalent to one and a half hours of profound rest. Finally, in between 03:00 AM to 05:00 AM, one hour of sleep is equivalent to one hour of profound rest and sleeping beyond 05:00 AM is arrant wastage of time, energy and lifespan. In keeping with this less known fact I had arrived at ten hours of profound rest. Did you get my logic now?” The Swami with encyclopedic knowledge exhibited his hard earned wisdom.
“You are superb beyond words Swamiji and so is your wisdom. In your presence I am feeling encouraged like never before.” I submitted my sincere feelings. “But Swamiji, if only you permit, I want to clarify my niggling doubt in this context.”
“Please ask without any hesitations, my son.”
“Why at all should I get up so early to do the things that can well be done in the dead of night?”
“I am overjoyed to see you wearing your thinking cap, dear. There is a scientific reason behind preference for wee hours of the morning over the late night for constructive activities. The breed of people who sleep very late at night comprise of those who are pub visitors, club frequenters, hedonists, goons, vagabonds, cons, drunkards, debauchers and persons of easy virtues. The entire atmosphere is full of the negative impressions and vibrations of such immoral people. Their discouraging vibrations bear a subtle negative impact on the mind of moral people awake at that time and try to injure their determination, virtues, righteousness, purity and decency. Hence, the negative vibrations of the atmosphere impair the quality of constructive work being done by the upstanding and good people during late night.”
“On the contrary, the breed of people who wake up in the wee hours of the morning comprise of great yogis, God-realized sages, priests, ambitious students, people having cultured vision and high leadership qualities etcetera. The entire atmosphere is blessed by the holy and inspiring vibrations of these Gods of earth. Their positive and encouraging vibrations act on us like the gentle dew of the morning, unheard and scarcely noticed but still bringing into the bloom the fairest flower on earth. That’s why the early morning hours are mostly preferred by the best brains of the earth who work in alignment with the time-tested wisdom of the holy books.”
“Whether you are a student aspiring to top or excel in certain examination or a professional engrossed in strategic planning, research & development, rehearsals, practicing etcetera, early morning will accelerate your brain and body for enviable accomplishments. There should not be an iota of doubt in this as I have personally discovered by an experiment on two groups consisting of ten students each. One group kept itself awake well beyond the dead of night in order to prepare for the final examination while the other group woke up at 04:00 AM and underwent the preparation rigors for final examination. Obviously the other group who was the early bird was head and shoulders above the first group in the result list.” Swamiji’s words really blew my mind.
“Swamiji, you have competently dispelled the clouds of doubts from my mind by your effective sun rays of wisdom.” I gladly offered.
“Oh thanks! The bottom line is that you should be able to get and digest the training.” Master lovingly replied.
“I understand, Guruji,” sincerity shone brightly in my eyes.
“Getting up early in the morning increases longevity, improves intellect, strengthens the vital forces of the body and consolidates the power of immunity whereas the habit of rising late reduces longevity, induces laziness & sloth and kills the essential passion of doing great in life. A crucial thing to note in this context is that one should sleep with his head towards the east or south direction. Sleeping with one’s legs towards the south direction invites the negative impact of the north-southern magnetic field on the dissolved iron particles in our blood. That results into mental depression, inactivity and various diseases of the stomach. One who is desirous of intense peace, discrimination and health should not violate the ancient law of sleeping with his head towards the east or south direction.”
“Now don’t jump off the bed just after you open your eyes from a sound sleep, rather sit down quietly and meditate on your deity for a while. Thereafter join your palms together (side to side), look at them and lovingly imagine Goddess Laxmi blessing you from the upper portion of your palms, Goddess Saraswati blessing you from the middle portion of your palms and Lord Vishnu blessing you from the lower portion of your palms. Get down from the bed and pay obeisance to the mother earth, and then get fresh and carry out you action plan.”
“First few days you may feel drowsy and uncomfortable but don’t give up. A real soldier never gives up, my son, whether he is in the city or at the border – he cannot even think of giving up. Persist in the practice of rising early and soon you will experience a fountain of energy, purity, creativity and bubbling health welling up in your body, mind and soul.” Guruji voiced with his eyes lit up with burning zeal.
