Undergoing a sound and profound thinking spree in order to write about ‘thinking’ is actually a thought-provoking pursuit. I say so because I was literally at my wit’s end when I opened the Microsoft Office Word to key in this article. For I thought that on the one hand, if I opine in favor of the indispensability of thinking, I may sound ignoramus from Einstein’s standpoint as he affirms that “any man who reads too much and uses his brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking”. But on the other hand if I make an in-depth analysis disfavoring the overmastering necessity of thinking, I run the risk of sounding immature and silly from Henry Ford’s standpoint who proclaims that “thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.” Pretty contradicting observations from the men of influence and renown! Reckoning the stances of several such world-shapers and painstakingly decoding the imports of their observations on the act of thinking, I have finally plodded at a decision that I will pen my write-up in favor of the coveted act of thinking. The remark passed by Einstein on thinking is so esoteric that it, I am afraid, transcends the comprehension of ordinary human intelligence. So based on our pseudo-apprehension, let us not think that Einstein was against the act of productive thinking.
Globetrotting scientists have it that an ordinary human being uses less than 10 per cent of his brain in his entire life span. Now, we have heard and often felt that countless thoughts crowd into our mind every minute and at times we unconsciously cling to one predominant thought for minutes together. Based on this empirical evidence we may rightly self-interrogate that if majority of us think so much, than the judicious finding of those sagacious scientists claiming a parsimonious 10 per cent figure on brain-usage is certainly erroneous. Well that’s not thinking in correct sense of terms; you may call it daydreaming or woolgathering but certainly not thinking. Perhaps this is what the great science wizard, Einstein, wanted to point out to the people at large. Thinking means contemplating, pondering, introspecting, musing, heart-searching and reasoning. Thinking encapsulates the mechanism by which brain is constructively used for personal as well as philanthropic causes. Thinking is always goal-oriented and verifiable. Legitimate thinking effortlessly qualifies for undergoing the stringencies of control system. This is the beauty of legitimate thinking process that – in the light of goals or intent – it can be remedied as and when it goes awry. Wishful craziness or whimsical thinking resists change or control measures, just like the people with banal outlook and dated psyche who maintain an arm’s length from dynamism and change. My ideas are well supported by George Bernard Shaw as he observed that “few people think more than two or three times a year; I have made an international reputation for myself by thinking once a week.” What a potent verity!
One can attain unparallel pinnacles of success if he inculcates in himself the enviable habit of thinking in right direction. Thinking is the genesis of all knowledge, all creation; In fact everything that can be sensed or felt by us is the unquestionable outcome of thinking. There are people who break records and others who break themselves under same set of circumstances – reason is the difference in the level and force of thinking. Thinking as an activity should be so forceful that it galvanizes you into action. Only then will you be able to understand why thinking pays off extraordinarily to only 10 per cent of the population who dare to use their grey matter beyond the ordinary mark of 10 per cent. Until and unless your thoughts (ethical of course) become things you are still a mediocre thinker. An unorganized student, for instance, thinks one day to turn over a new leaf and be punctual in terms of scholastic demands of his college. He manages somehow to attend his classes for a couple of days and then he gives in to his monkey nature. What happened with him is, he got bamboozled by his own tricky, restive and untrained mind. The focused contemplation was not forceful enough to keep the tenacity of his determination intact. And once we succeed in manifesting our thoughts with unflinching determination for long, we change ourselves and the surroundings – if not world – we live in. Prosperity, satisfaction, joy, fulfillment, zeal, empathy etc make their way to us. Our brain power evolves and life blossoms. Many rare skills manifest in us when we make productive and intelligent thinking a part of our life. Two such winning skills have been introduced below.
Communication skills: Communication has by far been one of the most abstruse aspects of human activity. It is no wonder that the people who have burnt the midnight oil and toiled during the wee hours of the morning gradually gain a formidable command over the holistic mechanism of communication. When asked to the audience as to what communication actually stands for, I get repeated run-of-the-mill kind of answers which state that communication is ‘English speaking ability’ or at the most ‘exchange of information.’ This happens because most of the students and even the professionals (communication teachers included) refer only books to enrich themselves in terms of communication skills. Coming to our rescue in this context is Edmund Bruke who said that “reading without reflecting is like eating without digesting”. Communication is such a big, complex and rewarding ballgame that it elevates a person to an unimaginable pedestal in such a young age that people start deeming you as a lucky fellow. Well, the harder you think, the luckier you get. There is no other reason why Charles Schwab, the first president of United States Steel Company, was paid approximately $2700 per day at the age of only 38 by Andrew Carnegie.
Leadership Skills: “On the subject of leadership, never have so many labored so long to say so little,” remarks Sri Asim Chaudhuri. Nonetheless, this highly explored, sought-after and at the same time elusive skill owes its origin to forceful, result-driven thinking. After India if there is any other nation that has passed through the enriching habit of action-oriented thinking, leaving trailblazing concepts as examples for others to emulate, it is Japan. A nation devastated in World War II, poor in natural resources, population less than that of Uttar Pradesh in India and yet emerging as one of the most dominating and legendary economic nation in the world. How? It is the amazing culture of leadership that the nation spawned in the form of two rewarding concepts called Samurai and the spirit of bushido. First these leadership concepts were expressed in their defense mechanism during war and thereafter the Japanese evolved these concepts and produced industrial samurais infused with the spirit of economic bushido. It takes courage to create a culture of enduring excellence, to be a person of character, to be a man of values – a real leader.
It is only for the want of effective and efficient thinking that a college with world class infrastructure and eight years of existence does door to door begging for a handful of students whereas other college or university with lesser years to its credit brims over with students. What they don’t think is they need to have substance over form and not form over substance. It is how and what you think that determines your future stand. This is a very scary time that the world is passing through, a time of abject crisis. One unethical move and you are history. To cut the long story short, it is action time now, let’s put on our thinking cap.
